Has anyone got any guidelines for using parentheses around a phrase that ends with a "smile" emoticon? My copy of Strunk & White doesn't cover this.

Mon, November 21, 2005 - 8:31 PM<lol> I hope the Chicago Manual of Style never adds smileys (and I would do it like this, but I am nobody : )). This is like the OED adding 'Bootylicious'. Blasphemy!

Tue, November 22, 2005 - 1:34 AMA friend of mine came up with a good suggestion... inside parentheses, a smiley emoticon must use a > mouth. (Like this :-> ) I think it's an elegant solution. -

Sat, December 17, 2005 - 10:33 AMIf the smiley is going to stay ASCII, I like merging the two end parens just to be cute.
If the smiley is going to appear as an icon, then there are no double parens.
