Has anyone got any guidelines for using parentheses around a phrase that ends with a "smile" emoticon? My copy of Strunk & White doesn't cover this.

Hey how come when people work at home they say they work From home? Doesn't "from" imply that they've left?

I work At home. If i left the house to do my job then i'd be working from home.

Transition. A passing or passagefrom one condition, action or (rarely)place, to another;change.
That's what it meant in my 1955 Oxford Universal Dictionary(with my name in gilt on the spine!)

When,oh when, did this word become a verb meaning "to move from one place to another"?

i mean, you can transfer, transport, transmit, transmigrate, i don't feel like typing the rest of the page. Why must we "transition"??

I've been having an argument with my girlfriend for a while now. Is it OK to say that something is 'very unique.' She thinks that something is either unique or not unique. There is no 'very unique.' There are no degrees of uniqueness.

Help settle our little dispute, and save our relationship from certain peril. What say the experts in this tribe?

i jogged past a long line of flags from various countries this morning and for some reason this occurred to me:

costa rica - costa rican
granada - granadan
samoa - samoan

the rule seems to be that you just add an 'n'.

so why don't we have canadans living up north?!
Arrgh. I also see an alarming amount of apostrophes misused to pluralize (sample's). WTF?

A Pedant's Tale

As I was meandering along the sidewalk a few days ago, I noticed a woman with a shirt on. In and of itself, that might not seem an event worth recounting, but bear in mind that this shirt had words printed on it. What, you may ask, were those words?

"KNOW
IT ALL"

I felt temptation overtake me, but restraint won the day. As much as I wanted to, I did not ask her, "Shouldn't that be hyphenated? Do you really mean that statement as an imperative?"

Now, of course, I only regret my tactful silence.

Because I always wanted to join an International League.

The only other one with which I was even remotely connected was the International League of Intellectual Fascists (an Ayn Rand groupie group), and, pedant though I am, I did not care to be associated with that league...I am not fond of any sort of fascism. But that was another time, another place.

And I know, you will all (both) now crack the pedantic whip at me for having begun two sentences with conjunctions.

"YOUR" (yr, yôr, yr; yr when unstressed)

adj. The possessive form of you.

Used as a modifier before a noun: your boots; your accomplishments.

A person's; one's: The light switch is on your right.

Informal. Used with little or no sense of possession to indicate a type familiar to the listener: your basic three-story frame house.
